In September and October this year IREX Europe helped participants come from regions across Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan to attend a Media and Information Literacy training at KIMEP University, the American University of Central Asia, the National Conference of Kyrgyz Librarians in Issyk Kul and at the Kazakh regional libraries in Kostanay and Kyzylorda.
Over the last seven months IREX Europe together with our local partners have trained over 100 teachers, librarians and university professors in how to give lessons in media literacy, with workshops focusing on how to verify sources, spot photo-shopped images and take a critical approach to journalism.
In response to positive feedback from training participants, we are organising further workshops in December 2017 in Bishkek and January 2018 in Astana.
IREX Europe’s current work in Central Asia focuses on improving levels of media and information literacy (MIL) in Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. Our project is run in partnership with Albany Associates and funded by the UK Conflict and Stability Fund.
