IREX Europe working with young reporters and Sens Interdits theatre festival

Sens Interdits invites theatre troupes from around the world to take part in a bi-annual theatre festival in Lyon. This year between 19 and 29 of October 2017.

The director of the festival, Patrick Penot, is an IREX Europe board member and we are collaborating with Sens Interdits for the second time. This year we will be working with students and young journalists who have been recruited as “Youth Reporters” to work on the festival. The idea is to introduce young students from diverse backgrounds to the world of journalism, in France and around the world.

In July our team ran an event focused on international development and the role of the media and civil society, including journalist ethics and practical reporting exercises.

We discussed the dangers of non-free media, the need for media literacy education and presented our current projects, including Media and Human Rights Support in the Eurasian region and Media and Information Literacy in Moldova and Central Asia.

To mark 2017 as the year of French-Colombian relations, our intern Mateo (from Colombia himself) gave a presentation on the history of journalism and human rights in Colombia.

The students then performed role-plays involving journalists acting in unethical ways to extract information.
