Human Rights

IREX Europe works to promote fundamental rights in closed societies. We work with Human Rights Defenders to strengthen their capacity in the field, to strengthen local and international networking and to provide emergency support and legal support to victims of repression.

Our work in this area includes:

  • Training campaigners and human rights organisations, including workshops in law, advocacy, internet marketing and new technologies.
  • Providing digital and/or physical protection and assistance to human rights organisations
  • Supporting artistic and cultural events to promote human rights
  • Travel funds to allow human rights defenders to attend events and training
  • Creating an online legal resource for human rights lawyers and paralegals and providing rapid-response training
  • Emergency funds to provide legal, financial or material aid to people are at risk, facing unfair detention or prosecution.
  • National and international campaigning on media freedom cases before the ECHR
  • Assisting youth and community leaders at a grassroots level to strengthen community ties and facilitate dialogue, including in post-conflict zones.
  • Running workshops to bringing citizens and marginalized groups into peace and community building processes


Central Asia: Fostering a Culture of Human Rights Central Asia: Fostering a Culture of Human Rights The Fostering a Culture of Human Rights in Central Asia project, funded by European Initiative for Democracy and Human Rights funds (EIDHR), aims at advancing the rights of women in Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan by equipping journalists with the skills necessary to raise awareness of their situation and hold policy-makers to account
Georgia : "Making Waves: A Community Radio Project" Georgia : “Making Waves: A Community Radio Project” Through the Making Waves: A Community Radio Project in Georgia, IREX Europe in partnership with the BBC World Service Trust and the Tbilisi-based Association Studio Re, the country’s first two independent community radio stations were established. The stations, in the ethnic enclaves of Ninotsminda (Javakheti) and Marneuli (Kvemo Kartli), broadcast predominantly in minority languages (Armenian, Georgian, and Russian) and are run by a core team of local journalists with significant input from volunteers both on the programming and managerial side.
Indonesia :  Promoting Tolerance and Dialogue through Interactive Theatre in Eastern Indonesia Indonesia : Promoting Tolerance and Dialogue through Interactive Theatre in Eastern Indonesia The Promoting Tolerance and Dialogue through Interactive Theatre in Eastern Indonesia project was designed to bring youth from conflict and post-conflict areas into productive dialogue through an innovative use of theatre, and to build local capacity for ongoing work in conflict prevention and mitigation. IREX Europe worked with an Indonesian counterpart, the Center for Civic Education-Indonesia (CCEI), to implement the project, which is funded by the UK Foreign & Commonwealth Office’s Strategic Programme Fund.
