Florence studied Archeology and Law, as a double degree and then spent a number of years living and working in the Middle East (Syria) as a history and geography teacher and as a French teacher with the AEFE (French Agency for teaching in French/teaching French abroad). Through this experience Florence gained a deep experience and understanding of the Middle East and North Africa, and has a good level of Arabic. She has a diploma in Arabic from the University of Damas.
On her return to France Florence completed a Masters degree in International Human Rights law and then worked as an intern at the High Commision on Human Rights at the United Nations MENA unit. She then moved to the Catholic University of Lyon where she remains and is both a full professor and a member of the IDHL team (Institute for Human Rights of Lyon). IDHL runs a masters programme for international students in Lyon as well as assists human rights teaching in the MENA region.
